How to make a symbolic patch
Handmade patches are more than just decorative—they can be symbols of personal meaning, creativity, and self-expression. Whether you're commemorating an event, representing an idea, or simply crafting something beautiful, making your own patch allows you to stitch your story into fabric. After leading a successful workshop with the Society of Studio Art Students, I wanted to share this process with a wider audience. This guide will take you step by step through creating a handmade symbolic patch that’s entirely your own!
1. Choose Your Shape & Fabric
Start by selecting a shape that represents your chosen meaning—it could be a simple circle, a bold emblem, or an abstract design that speaks to you. Felt is an excellent choice for the base fabric since it's affordable, durable, and doesn’t fray.
2. Preparing the Patch Edges
If using felt, no need to worry about fraying—the edges can remain raw. For other fabrics, you can create a decorative blanket stitch around the perimeter to add texture and prevent fraying.
3. How to Do a Blanket Stitch
This stitch not only secures the edges but also adds a handmade touch.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Thread a needle with embroidery floss or strong thread, tying a knot at the end.
Start at the edge of the fabric, pushing the needle from back to front so the knot remains hidden.
Make a stitch by inserting the needle from front to back, about ⅛ to ¼ inch away from the edge.
Loop the thread under the needle before pulling it through—this creates a visible edge loop.
Repeat this process around the perimeter, ensuring each stitch is evenly spaced.
When you reach the starting point, make a small knot on the backside to secure the stitch.

4. Adding Depth with Layers
For a multi-dimensional look, layer different fabrics onto your base patch. Attach them using hand sewing, machine stitching, or fabric glue, depending on your style preference. Experiment with overlapping fabrics to create unique patterns, imagery, or color contrasts.
5. Customizing Your Patch
Make your patch truly personal by: ✨ Hand-embroidering words or symbols that reflect its meaning. ✨ Cutting out images from printed cotton for a collage-style effect. ✨ Using iron-on transfer paper to apply specific designs onto fabric before attaching them to the patch. ✨ Adding embellishments like beads, buttons, charms, or small trinkets for extra texture and uniqueness.
6. Attaching Your Patch
Decide if it will be permanent or removable:
Permanent: Sew or glue it directly onto clothing, bags, or accessories.
Removable: Attach a safety pin, snap button, or hook-and-loop (Velcro) to the back for flexibility.
7. Final Touches
Before wearing or using your patch, test its durability—ensuring all fabric layers and embellishments are securely attached. If using glue, allow ample drying time before handling your patch.
